Goldfoot Genealogy

Helen's parents were William Hochfeld (b: 1882 Russia) andFrancis Cuschner (b:1887, Bismark, N. Dakota, USA).  Helen also had 2 brothers, born in 1910 and 1916.  Helen grew up reading Hebrew.  

William's parents were Rabbi Chaim David ben Simcha Rivka Hochfeld, (b: 1829 Belaya Tzerkaw, Ukraine, Bessarabia, Russia)  and Rachel "David" Erlich (b: 1841 Kishinev, Ukraine, Russia).  

Therefore, the Hochfelds are not blood relatives, but are on my extended family tree.  We always wondered how Helen became so educated in reading Hebrew.  Uncle Charlie and Aunt Helen had moved shortly after marrying to Grand Coulee, Washington,  and came to Portland once in a while to visit, which was exciting as Uncle Charlie made a big thing over me, and was so sharp in dressing and was so outgoing and funny.  I loved his visits. 

Helen's grandfather, the Rabbi, had a Department store in Grand Coulee by 1941, and Uncle Charlie worked for him.  

Interestingly, my father was kicked out of Hebrew school as being interruptive.  Charlie and Dad's father, Nathan Goldfus/Goldfoot had died when Charlie was 6 and Dad was 4, so they had no direction. My dad couldn't even graduate high school because he quit to work in a butcher shot and help support the family of his mom and 3 other siblings; Charlie and 2 sisters. 

  I don't know if Charlie remained in Hebrew school or not.  They had wound up on the streets of Portland selling newspapers at that tender age of 4 and 6. Though my Baba was religious, as an immigrant when a young teenager and alone, she couldn't read or write in any language and wasn't a help for his sons in Judaism other than what she was able to do;  attend synagogue alone and provide seders for her family.  Charlie was Jewish, but probably a non-practicing Jew like my father.  There was no synagogue in Grand Coulee.  They would have had to drive to Spokane, across the state, to get to one for the high holidays.

 Nate, my cousin, did not receive any Hebrew education.  When his father, Charlie, died in 1949, Nate left Grand Coulee and moved in with us.  He was like a brother.  I'm not sure if he ever realized that he was the grandson of a Cohen Rabbi.  What Nate liked to do was to tinker on our 1940 2 door Ford that my father had for us to get to high school.  Nate dropped me off at Washington High and he went onto Benson High, a few blocks further.  He liked cars, and eventually became a master mechanic.   We all went to Nate when considering to buy a car. 

Later on in life, I somehow connected with Herbert David Hochfeld of Portland, Oregon. Herb, like Rabbi Chaim David Hochfeld, had a large Army and Navy Surplus store in Portland. At the time I had started my hobby of genealogy.  Herb, (b: 1922 Portland, Oregon, and was married to Bea Lazsrus (b:1925 Regina, Canada) and was the son of  Frank Burrick Hochfeld (b: 1892 Portland, Oregon) and Clara Friedman (b: 1895 Poland).  Frank's father was Simon "Solomon" Samuel Hochfeld (b:1857 Lutsk, Ukraine, Russian Empire) and Gitel Gertie Gertrude Tonkonagy Tonkin (1857 Russia ?)   Simon's parents were Rabbi Chaim David ben Simcha Rivka Hochfeld, (b: 1829 Belaya Tzerkaw, Ukraine, Bessarabia, Russia)  and Rachel "David" Erlich (b: 1841 Kishinev, Ukraine, Russia).

My 1st cousin, Nate Goldfoot and Herb Hochfeld were 2nd cousins.  

The Rabbi Chaim David Hochfeld was the son of Simcha Simkha Levi Hochfeld (b:1810 Kishnev, Poland/Bessarabia, Ukraine, Russian Empire). He had married Feiga bat Leiba "Rivka" (b: c1816 probably also in Kishnev, Poland).  Simcha's father was Chaim Moshe Hochfeld (1790 Ukraine).  The descendants have been traced with 6 more Hochfelds to Isaac Ben Naphtali Ha Cohen Hochfeld (1655 Ukraine).  Being Cohens, they could have all been rabbis, too.
